Which Kinds of Traffic Are Bad?

If you do business online, then you know that getting visitors to your website is a top priority. There are many ways to get traffic to your site. However, not all types of traffic are good.

Ask any Boston online marketing expert about what their main concerns are for their business, and they will probably mention “getting enough website visitors”. On the internet, there are dozens of ways to get traffic to a website. However, not all of them are actually good. Here are some types of traffic that are often sold to unsuspecting buyers that you should avoid due to low quality.

  • Pop-under ads

These are ads that are similar to pop-up ads, but the ad pops under the user’s browser window. To see them, the user would need to actually switch over to the new window or browser tab that is created. Most people online consider them to be an annoyance and simply close them without even bothering to look at what is on them. These ads will simply waste your bandwidth and are unlikely to get you any conversions. They are often sold by sites offering cheap traffic, as well as on webmaster forums.

  • Junk email ads

Any good online marketing expert, such as a Boston SEO company will tell you to stay away from these. Very often a seller of traffic will claim that they can get your email promotions to thousands of targeted email recipients who have “opted in”. However, the issue with these lists is that very often they are just people who have opted in at some site and had their email address sold, and resold and resold again countless times. They will probably ignore your emails in the best case and at worst you can be accused of sending out spam, which can cause many problems.

  • Traffic exchanges

Sometimes a webmaster will ask a Boston website development company whether taking part in traffic exchanges is a good idea. In general, it simply is a waste of time. A traffic exchange works like this: you browse other websites for a particular amount of time (usually the minimum is very low, like 30 seconds) and then earn points which allow your website to be seen by others participating in the traffic exchange. The problem is that 99% of the people on a traffic exchange will have absolutely zero interest in your website and will just want to earn credits to get traffic to theirs. So the traffic quality will be pretty much zero. The only kinds of offers or products that it would make sense to promote on such a site (even here it’s a stretch) would be those aimed at other webmasters, such as free “make online” lead offers, as well as some “email submit” cost per action offers. The odds of someone actually directly buying something from a site on a traffic exchange would be roughly equivalent to winning $1000 in the lottery.
